The European Association for American Studies is pleased to maintain a list of news and events from across the American Studies community. The items below include news from EAAS itself and submissions from other institutions and organisations. You will find posts organised by category below. To submit content to appear on this page, please submit your content to us by completing the submission form. Posts are published once a week. Please only submit your entry once.

EAAS Mailing List

The EAAS mailing list is another way to distribute and receive information. The list is moderated on behalf of EAAS by Vasileios N. Delioglanis (HELAAS Board Member).

Through this list you will receive calls-for-papers and information about activities pertaining to the field of American Studies delivered to your email inbox. The list also serves to disseminate information from the EAAS and member associations in Europe. In addition, we encourage you to use this list to communicate other information that might be useful to American Studies scholars in Europe, such as announcements of conferences, jobs, grants, and fellowships.

    Book Release: Redrawing the Western: A History of American Comics and the Mythic West

    University of Texas Press has released Redrawing the Western: A History of American Comics and the Mythic West, authored by William Grady. Redrawing the Western charts a history of the Western genre in American comics from the late 1800s through the 1970s and beyond. Besides tracing the history, forms, and politics of American Western comics in and around the twentieth century, Grady offers an original reassessment of the important role of comics in the development of the Western genre, ranking them alongside popular fiction and film in the process.

    Contemporary maternal subjectivities on the page and on the screen – Call for Papers for an edited collection

    We are seeking contributions for an edited volume that explore the complexities of maternal subjectivity in contemporary literature (broadly defined), visual art, digital media, video games, social media, AI as well as in film and on television.     CfP: Irish Association for American Studies 2024 Postgraduate Symposium: American Carnage

    Asynchronous course on Multimodality and Anglophone Narratives (Winter & Spring cycles)

    The 100-hour program Multimodality: Print and Digital Anglophone Narratives is delivered by the members of the “Multimodal Research and Reading Group” of the Department of American Literature and Culture of the School of English at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. The course runs during the winter (cycle 3) and spring (cycle 4) semesters, it is delivered in English, and provides an in-depth understanding of American literary multimodal storytelling in print and digital format.

    Call for papers – Genre in new media PGR/ECR conference

    Genre borders of our times fade away. The loss of defining characteristics forces the academics and artists to ask: “Do we still need genres, and why do we need it?”. During this conference, we aim to provide a platform for discussion. We want to hear from you about genres in new media and popular culture. The conference is going to involve two sessions, one in English on 18th November, and one in Polish on 19th. Our guests are dr Sorcha Ni Fhlainn from Manchester Metropolitan University; and Magdalena Wleklik, a screenwriter and a playwright, winner of the 2021 ArtSkrypt award.

    Call for Papers: EJAS Special Issue The Uncanny States of America – Encountering the Planetary

    Taking into consideration recent developments toward a Planetary Cultural and Literary Studies, this special issue of The European Journal of American Studies aims to rethink and recontextualize the American project not through the homogenizing impulses of the global sublime but through the decentered relationality of planetarity—the act of “making our home unheimlich or uncanny” (Spivak 74).     In Progress is a peer-reviewed online journal based at the English Department of Leibniz University Hannover, Germany. It provides a space to publish excellent work written by graduate students in Anglophone literary, cultural, and media studies, focusing in particular (but not exclusively) on the field of North American Studies. For the next issue (vol. 3, no. 1), In Progress invites contributions of up to 7,500 words (including abstract, footnotes, and list of works cited). The deadline for submissions is October 1, 2024.
