The European Association for American Studies is pleased to maintain a list of news and events from across the American Studies community. The items below include news from EAAS itself and submissions from other institutions and organisations. You will find posts organised by category below. To submit content to appear on this page, please submit your content to us by completing the submission form. Posts are published once a week. Please only submit your entry once.

EAAS Mailing List

The EAAS mailing list is another way to distribute and receive information. The list is moderated on behalf of EAAS by Vasileios N. Delioglanis (HELAAS Board Member) and Izabella Kimak (EAAS Secretary-General).

Through this list you will receive calls-for-papers pertaining to the field of American Studies delivered to your email inbox. The list also serves to disseminate information from the EAAS and member associations in Europe. In addition, we encourage you to use this list to communicate other information that might be useful to American Studies scholars in Europe, such as announcements of conferences, jobs, grants, fellowships, and publication opportunities.

Subscribe: To subscribe to the EAASLIST mailing list point your browser to jiscmail.ac.uk/EAASLIST. Choose the “Subscribe or Unsubscribe” link, complete your details on the subscription page and select the Subscribe option. You will receive a confirmation email which you will need to respond to.

Post: You can post to the list by sending an email to EAASLIST@JISCMAIL.AC.UK. You need to be a subscriber to the list to be able to post. Please make sure your message reads exactly as you want it to be sent out; the moderators do not modify messages, but only approve them.

    CfP Metamorphoses in Contemporary Literature

    We are delighted to announce the conference "Metamorphoses in Contemporary Literature" to be held at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz from May 22nd-24th 2025, organized by Carolin Jesussek, Berenike Jakob, and Franziska Rauh. The conference includes an ECR networking event in the form of a creative writing workshop with Anelise Chen, author of the hybrid memoir Clam Down (2025). A reading by Chen is to be included in the conference program. We are inviting those interested to submit their abstracts by January 31st.

    CFA: Audrey Flack Short-Term Fellowship, Smithsonian American Art Museum

    The Audrey Flack Short-Term Fellowship at the Smithsonian American Art Museum supports a one-month residency for a predoctoral, postdoctoral, or senior scholar who is researching a topic in American art and who resides, works, or attends school outside of commuting distance from Washington, D.C. Researchers whose personal circumstances (i.e., financial constraints, employment conditions, care-giving responsibilities, or other limitations) preclude them from participating in longer-term residencies are encouraged to apply. Application deadline: February 1, 2025.

    University of Texas Press has released Redrawing the Western: A History of American Comics and the Mythic West, authored by William Grady. Redrawing the Western charts a history of the Western genre in American comics from the late 1800s through the 1970s and beyond. Besides tracing the history, forms, and politics of American Western comics in and around the twentieth century, Grady offers an original reassessment of the important role of comics in the development of the Western genre, ranking them alongside popular fiction and film in the process.

    We are seeking contributions for an edited volume that explore the complexities of maternal subjectivity in contemporary literature (broadly defined), visual art, digital media, video games, social media, AI as well as in film and on television. We invite interdisciplinary submissions anchored in literary and cultural studies that engage primarily with Anglophone contexts but we also welcome comparative analyses of motherhood in various cultures and backgrounds.

    CfP: Irish Association for American Studies 2024 Postgraduate Symposium: American Carnage

    The Irish Association for American Studies Postgraduate Symposium will take place on Friday, November 22nd 2024. For this one-day in-person event, we invite scholars across all disciplines of American Studies to reflect on the theme of ‘American Carnage.’ 300-word proposals for fifteen-minute papers or 500-word proposals for three-person panels, along with a short academic biography (150 words) in the same document should be sent to postgrad@iaas.ie by Monday, 21st October 2024.

    Asynchronous course on Multimodality and Anglophone Narratives (Winter & Spring cycles)

    The 100-hour program Multimodality: Print and Digital Anglophone Narratives is delivered by the members of the “Multimodal Research and Reading Group” of the Department of American Literature and Culture of the School of English at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. The course runs during the winter (cycle 3) and spring (cycle 4) semesters, it is delivered in English, and provides an in-depth understanding of American literary multimodal storytelling in print and digital format.

    Call for papers – Genre in new media PGR/ECR conference

    Genre borders of our times fade away. The loss of defining characteristics forces the academics and artists to ask: “Do we still need genres, and why do we need it?”. During this conference, we aim to provide a platform for discussion. We want to hear from you about genres in new media and popular culture. The conference is going to involve two sessions, one in English on 18th November, and one in Polish on 19th. Our guests are dr Sorcha Ni Fhlainn from Manchester Metropolitan University; and Magdalena Wleklik, a screenwriter and a playwright, winner of the 2021 ArtSkrypt award.

    CFA: Smithsonian American Art Museum Fellowship Program

    The Smithsonian American Art Museum and its Renwick Gallery encourages applications for its 2025-2026 research fellowships, awarded through the Smithsonian Institution Fellowship Program (SIFP). Residencies are available at the graduate, doctoral, postdoctoral, and senior levels. The deadline to apply is October 15.
