Abstract
“As a woman I have no country. As a woman my country is the whole world.” In her iconic statement, Virginia Woolf encapsulates the complex experience of countless women throughout history who have felt displaced from any single nation or culture and, through writing, have come to discover a truth about the self that transcends borders and invites a deeper sense of identity and belonging. My own journey toward that understanding has been both literal and literary, traveling the world as an independent woman, American by birth but with a legacy of rootlessness, while writing and living the stories and poems of the self I’ve simultaneously discovered and
created en route.
